Arthroscopy is a commonly performed, minimally-invasive procedure often used to help more accurately diagnose and treat a number of joint conditions, disease and injuries. But the joint most frequently examined using arthroscopy is the knee joint. Many areas of the knee can be affected by injury or disease. Arthroscopy assists Dr Venuto in determining the extent of your condition; allowing him to view muscles, tendons, cartilage, ligaments and bones through a tiny camera.
Dr Venuto may recommend arthroscopy for diagnosis and treatment of the following Knee conditions:
- Cartilage wear and tear, injury or damage
- Ligament tears
- Tendon damage
- Loose or ‘floating’ pieces of bone or cartilage.
- Inflammation of the knee
During arthroscopic knee surgery, Dr. Venuto makes a few small incisions in the knee. He then inserts a small instrument that acts as a camera (arthroscope) inside the joint to
provide a clear view inside the knee projected onto an external screen. Arthroscopy then allows him to diagnose, assess the degree of damage, and treat the knee; making repairs with the use of tiny instruments inserted through other small incisions. Most arthroscopic procedures will take less than an hour, depending on the diagnosis and repair that may be necessary. Dr. Venuto has performed thousands of successful arthroscopies during his years in practice.
